Shabana Azmi also known as Shabana Azmy was born on the 18th of September 1950 in New Delhi, India. Shabana Azmi is one of the leading indian actresses. Shabana is also a famous activist, and her performances in films in a variety of genres have generally earned her praises and awards including five wins of National Film Award for Best Actress.

Shabana Azmi got her first role in the year 1972 in the movie Ankur by Shyam Benegal, for which she won a national award.

Shabana Azmi is married to Indian poet Javed Akhtar.

In the year 1996 Shabana Azmi had a leading role in Deepa Mehta film Fire where she played the role of a Lesbian lonely woman , Radha, who falls in love with her sister-in-law. The story was among the first movies in indian history to talk about the issue of lesbianism, Radha being the name of a goddess, the movie got many protests from many social groups in India, the movie also got threats of banning by Indians.
