Islam also spelled as (Islahm) is an Arabic word which means (Submission to God). El Islam or (The Islam) is a the religious faith of Muslims, The word Islam means literally submission, and the faith means submission to God. The Islam as a religion is considered by Muslims who practice this faith as being the last message of God to all mankind. Islam is the most widely practiced religion in Africa. Islam is based on the five pillars of Islam which are prayer, giving of alms, fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, pilgrimage to Mecca, and faith in God. The Islam was sent down upon Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). He recorded in broad outlines in the Qur'an, and described in detail in the Sunnah. Islam is a religion of peace, love and on a belief in one god and the teaching of Muhammad. Like Judaism and Christianity, Islam is considered to be an Abrahamic religion. The name Islam as a religion was initiated by Muhammad early in the 7th (570-632 AD) in Mecca and Medina, Saudi Arabia (then Persia). Islam rapidly spread by religious conversion and military conquest under the leadership of Muhammad and his successors. Islam is based to the teachings and life of Mohammed. Islam is composed of two major divisions the Sunni which means the mainstream and they are the largest and the other division is those of the more radical Shi'ites. The sufism mystical tradition includes many Sunnis and other Shi'ites. It is estimated that there are 1.4 billion adherents of Islam. This number makes Islam the second-largest religion in the world. Islam is the second largest religion in the United Kingdom also, and many other European countries. France itself has the largest Muslim population in Western Europe. If current trends continue it will soon become the second largest religion in the United States. It is a fact that Islam is predominant in Northern Africa, the Middle East, Pakistan, and Indonesia. It might be surprising to know that the majority of Muslims are not Arabs. Arabs count for only 20 percent of Muslims who originate from Arab countries.
