Practically speaking, all the countries of the world with good economies have suffered a lot because of the latest recession period. Unemployment is and has been a big problem all over the world since many years. However, the recession made some countries suffer from very bad unemployment rates much more than others.

When we talk about unemployment it is good to mention that people who are under 16, are in the armed forces and people who are currently incarcerated are not considered unemployed because they are not considerate to be a part of the work force. Further more, people who work as part-time or for few hours a day are not considered unemployed. In addition, people who don’t have jobs but who have not been looking for work within the last 30 days are not considered to be unemployed.

The United States of America and Canada have both experienced massive job losses during the recession period between 2008 and 2011. The United States had an unemployment rate of 10 percent and Canada had an unemployment rate of 9 percent. In Latin America, Argentina and Chile both showed rates around 7%. Colombia showed 12.2%, Ecuador &Peru 7.7.

Europe has also been hit hard by the recession with some countries showing better or worse rates than others. Spain had the highest unemployment rates with 20.05%. Ireland showed 11.8 percent. France for example had a 10.1 percent unemployment rate and Greece more than 11%. Portugal suffered from 10.7%, and Italy 8.2.In Luxembourg, the unemployment rate was 6 percent. The Netherlands and Norway unemployment rates were around 4 percent. In Eastern Europe, Bosnia and Herzegovina scored 43.4% of unemployment! Estonia showed 19.8%, Kosovo 73%, Latvia 20%, and Russia 9.2.

As far as Asia is concerned the unemployment rates were very low despite the recession period. In Hong Kong and Japan, the unemployment rate was around 5 percent. In Singapore, the unemployment rate is as low as 3 percent. South Korea unemployment rate was 4 percent and Taiwan was 6 percent. The unemployment rate of India was 4 percent. China, the factory of the World, has 4.1% unemployment.

Regarding the Middle East, Qatar is the country with the least unemployment rate 0.5 percent. Also Kuwait unemployment rate is only 1.5 percent. Both Lebanon and Syria unemployment rates were around 10.0 percent. While Jordan and United Arab Emirates both had a rate of 12 percent. Yemen has more than 35% unemployment. The United Arab Emirates suffered from around 13% unemployment.

In general, the continent of Africa has the highest unemployment rates of all times. Zimbabwe is the country with the highest unemployment rate of 95 percent. Other African countries such as Nauru and Liberia are around 88%. Morocco unemployment rate was 10%,whereas Tunisia faced more than 14% which lead to the latest social unease and riots. Egypt showed 9.4.South Africa has more than 25% unemployment.Libya shows 13% unemployment.

Regarding Australia, the unemployment rates was 6 percent. While New Zealand rate was 5 percent.
