Arabic Movies at the TIFF

It has been many years now since the Toronto International Film Festival has started showing Arabic Movies.

In 2008, The TIFF played Caramel as part of its International Arabic Movies. The movie was directed by Nadine Labaki.

In 2010, a single Arabic movie from Egypt called Microphone participated in the 35th event of the Toronto International Film Festival. It is directed by Ahmad Abdalla. He had also presented 'Heliopolis' the previous year, before withdrawing it from the schedule to protest the presentation of 10 films on the Jewish metropolis for the festival's 'City to City' program. Ahmed Maher's 'The Traveller' was also present, just like Cairo-born pioneering filmmaker Yousry Nasrallah's 'Scheherazade, Tell me a Story'.

The movie Microphone,a new style of North African film making, mixes fiction and cinema realite as it follows an Egyptian expatriate's return to Alexandria. Khaled dives into a thriving underground music and arts scene, that showcases some of the most exceptional musicians. The principal cast included Khaled Abol Naga, Menna Shalabi, Yosra El Lozy, Hany Adel, Ahmad Magdy, and Atef Yousef.
