Mass Games

If you think the opening ceremonies at the Olympic Games are spectacular, wait till you see the Mass Games of North Korea! ‘Amazing’ doesn’t even begin to describe the event! Most of the lucky ones who were fortunate enough to witness it live swear it’s the most impressive thing they have ever seen and will see!

The Mass Games is a visual feast and the largest choreographed gymnastics display in the world; a synchronized grandiose spectacle featuring over 100,000 participants in a 90 minute show of gymnastics, dance, acrobatics, and dramatic performance, accompanied by music and other effects.

Mass Games have been performed in North Korea since 1946; the ongoing one of 2010 (August 2nd- October 10th) will be the 120th. Performances are held every evening during that period at 7pm. The organizer of the Mass Games, Kim Jong Ho, defines the event as consisting of three elements: Firstly, gymnastics, then backdrop, finally music.

Gymnastics is the fundamental element, with more than 80,000 used in the floor display. The backdrop of the Mass Games, which details North Korea’s achievements and revolutionary history, is a huge mosaic covering a whole side of the stadium. It is considered to be the biggest picture in the world! It is orchestrated by a backdrop conductor that sends signals from the opposite side to more than 12,000 cardboard holders. Usually, school children are used for this part and are said to rehearse daily until perfection is achieved.

All the participants show incredible coordination abilities, as they are the building blocks of this enchanting masterpiece. Any slight mistake will ruin the overall performance. Also at the heart of the event is the devoted portrayal of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-Il (leaders of the Democratic People's Republic). The latter is always present at the opening show.

Tickets can be purchased on the spot in Pyongyang, with prices ranging from 80$ to 300$ depending on the seating area.
